What is SEO?

What is SEO? Some useful hints & tips!

Search engines index websites they believe to be authoritative and relevant. This relevance is measured by analysing page content (the words you and I read), and the results dictate where you'll rank.

So how is the 'relevance' measured? Well, search engines measure authority (mostly) based on the number and quality of other pages linking to the pages they index, and links are like votes.

To put it simply the more links to your website, the more important you look to the search engines!

How do I make my website appear in search results?

Simple: Excellent Content + Quality Links = Search Engine Success!

So how does Google decide where to rank web pages?

Google promotes pages it thinks are authoritive pages to the top of its rankings. As a website owner it's your job to create these authority pages. So in simple terms this means writing content and building back links (back links are links from other places on the web pointing to your website).

So basically SEO involves writing pages that use specific keywords, words people use in their searches, and then securing links from other pages in order to show how important your page is compared to everything else on the web. These links are essentially votes, and votes eventually get you promoted to page 1.

A simple 1-2-3 guide to getting better search engine results!

  • 1
  • Write great content that uses specific keywords and phrases used by people who search for your services/products.
  • 2
  • Build links to your pages to show how important/relevant they are.
  • 3
  • Keep on doing it!

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a simple method of ensuring a website can be found in the search engines for words and phrases relevant to what the website is about.

Some SEO companies may try to confuse you with complex strategies and costly proposals. Ask them "What is SEO?" and following a long winded explanation the chances are you'll be none the wiser. Here at Synergy we like you to not only understand 'What is SEO?', but 'Why do SEO?' and 'How to do SEO?'.

Links seem to be important, how do I get them?

Yes, links are important but don't mistake quality for quantity. A handful of links, from quality relevant sources, to your page, will have a much bigger impact on your page ranking than say thousands of low value links, as sold by lots of SEO companies (link farms). Avoid buying these kinds of links as they will more likely damage your reputation than enhance it!

To summarise...

Create an excellent website, with great content - something people want to read, then share your pages with other great websites and you'll quickly start to see your website traffic increase!
